About Our Family
Welcome! We are the Perry’s. My name is Suzy, and my husband is Mike. I’m a stay at home mom of 3 terrific kids, and we have 3 beloved dogs who are an integral part of our family. This page is dedicated to our Golden Retrievers, although we also have a Bernese Mountain Dog named Rory who will be bred in the spring. She does not have her own website, and I may need to repurpose this one at some point to accommodate both breeds. If you’re interested in a Berner puppy, you may also reach out through this site. She is also shown in AKC conformation and has several points toward her championship.
I participate in dog sports with my Goldens and Berner. My main interest is showing in AKC conformation as an owner handler, but I also work with my dogs in basic obedience, and I have an interest (although not the time currently) in agility. Breeding dogs is fairly new for us, having only had one litter so far, but thankfully I have some terrific mentors and friends with loads of experience to help me.
We run a small plant nursery and apiary on our farm. So if you ever want to talk dogs and dahlias, we’re your people. We are very outdoorsy people. We love to garden and enjoy nature and our time together of course. We are Christians, and we do our best to live out our Christian faith by being kind and authentic, with grace, mercy, and a little good humor thrown in.
We’re located in southeast Indiana, part of the Greater Cincinnati area. Our dogs are AKC registered, and we’re proud members of the Golden Retriever Club of America (GRCA), the Greater Cincinnati Golden Retriever Club (GCGRC), the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America (BMDCA), the Buckeye Bernese Mountain Dog Club (Buckeye BMDC), and the Hamilton Dog Training Club (HDTC).
Thank you so much for checking us out! Please feel free to reach out if you’re interested in a puppy. I can’t always get back with people right away because our life is sometimes lived in an abundance of activities, but I try to respond as best I can. If you don’t hear from me, please reach out again, or better yet, stop in sometime on one of our plant sale days or catch me at a dog show, and we can get to know each other.
Why We Breed Our Dogs
Our main goal in breeding our dogs is healthy puppies. That is first and foremost. We’ve done all the recommended health testing on our dogs and genetic testing to check for diseases common to Golden Retrievers. We breed to stud dogs that are also health tested, and we put a lot of thought into our breedings. We cannot prevent all things, but we do our best to limit the possibility of illness.
Second is personality. We want families to have a puppy that isn’t just cute, but also meets the needs of their family, whether that’s for a performance sport or as a family pet. If you check out our “Puppies” tab above you’ll find more information on the temperament testing that we do. Puppies are placed according to their temperament and the responses we receive in our puppy questionnaire. Please note that Goldens are sporting dogs though. They are an active breed and require a certain level of activity and training, especially while they’re young. They do mellow as they age, and there are some variations in temperament, but you should expect an energetic puppy that needs consistent training and positive reinforcement.
Third is conformation. We want to breed in accordance with the AKC breed standard to keep our breed in line with their purpose and true to form. We want sound puppies with a nice build and good movement that will be a good representation of the breed! In order to accomplish this, the stud dogs we select come from AKC show lines that are also health tested and judged for their conformation and temperament.
What we do not do is breed for color or with high frequency. We do not just have puppies readily available. If you want a puppy available on a certain date or within a certain timeframe or of a certain color or “look,” please look elsewhere. We are not your people.
How We Care For Our Dogs
Our dogs are part of our family. We are not a kennel, puppy mill, pet store, or backyard breeder. Our girls will be bred no more than once a year, so we do not have litters available with high frequency.
Our dogs live in our home, and they are spoiled rotten. We feed high quality dog food. They receive routine veterinary care. They are groomed regularly. They love to play fetch and swim in the pond. They are snuggled on the daily and join us in family activities. We even take them on vacations and camping with us. If we can’t, we have friends house sit so that they can stay comfortably in their home environment. They are members of our family and cared for accordingly.
For breeding purposes, our girls are taken to the vet for reproductive services to ensure that they receive excellent care through breeding, labor, delivery, and post partum.
We provide the best care possible for our puppies. Starting from birth, puppies are handled daily. They are weighed regularly to make sure they are gaining weight appropriately. They are introduced to various sights, sounds, and stimuli and given ample toys to play and interact with.
We want families to be involved with the puppies socialization so once they’re old enough, we invite families for visits with the gang. We want the puppies to be comfortable with a wide variety of people and ages.
We work on puppy manners. We believe in “four on the floor” when receiving attention, meaning all four paws should be planted on the floor unless they’re invited into a lap for snuggles. We gently, but firmly discourage puppy biting and bad behavior. And we do our best to encourage outside potty as weather allows, and litter box training when it doesn’t. Crate training will be introduced before going home to encourage an easy adjustment. This does not mean they will be fully crate trained. It is only an introduction to assist with the transition to their individual homes.
